5th Annual Gold Coast Endoscopy Symposium

Gold Coast University Hospital - 10th May 2019

The 5th Annual Gold Coast Endoscopy Symposium was conducted at the Gold Coast University Hospital (GCUH) on the 10th May 2019. There were 120 registered attendees at this event with consultants coming from around Australia. Four international faculty members provided lectures and performed like cases throughout the workshop. Highlights from the event centred around Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD) and Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR).

Dr Naohisa Yoshida is Assistant Professor at the Kyoto Prefectural University of Medicine and is a specialist in colonoscopy imaging and ESD using the Fujifilm Clutch Cutter. He performed the first live case of the symposium, an ESD in the rectum using the Fujifilm Clutch Cutter and the new Vision Distal Cap. During the successful resection broadcast, consultants we able to ask questions from the auditorium to get direct feedback on the procedure.

Dr Nick Tutticci from the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital in Brisbane used the Fujifilm 7000 system and Vision Distal Cap to demonstrate cold snare EMR techniques in the colon. Dr Tutticci is a researcher at the University of QLD in the area of serrated colonic polyps. During the procedure he was able to demonstrate the Zoom feature of the Fujifilm colonoscope along with the Linked Colour Imaging (LCI) and Blue Light Imaging (BLI) surveillance and assessment features.

The Endoscopy Symposium also featured a Saturday workshop for nurses and attracted over 45 nurses from the region. The training was conducted by nurses from the GCUH with the assistance of manufacturers.

CR Kennedy also conducted a hands-on workshop in conjunction with the GCUH on Saturday. Six clinicians attended the training where they received direct instruction from Dr Naohisa Yoshida on ESD techniques using the Fujifilm Clutch Cutter with the Vision Distal Caps. Dr Sneha John, Director of Endoscopy at the GCUH, assisted Dr Yoshida with the training. Clinicians were instructed in techniques using a gel model from Japan distributed by CR Kennedy. Each Dr was able to successfully resect the target area using the Clutch Cutter.

The feedback from the events was very positive. CR Kennedy looks forward to participating in the 6th Symposium in 2020 and is currently planning for more hands-on training events throughout 2019 and beyond.
